Mario and Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story (DS/DSi) Available Now (www.bowsersinsidestory.com) Mario Brothers Role Playing Game(RPG) is no stranger to the Nintendo scene.  From the Super Nintendo’s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars to recent release of  the DS Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the Mario RPG series has grown and improved over the course of time.  In the latest installment of the Mario console style RPG games, comes ‘Mario and Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story’, a story of Bowser’s evil plot to take over the Mushroom Kingdom.  Along the way Bowser is tricked into eating a magical mushroom which causes Bowser to inhale everything in sight, including Mario, Luigi and the Princess!  Get ready to embark on a journey to rescue the princess with many surprises along the way!

Presentation:

You are in control of two separate storylines.  One story features Bowser in his efforts to stop his enemy Fawful from taking over his castle.  The other takes place inside Bowser as you assume the role of Mario and Luigi with a mission to help save and restore Mushroom Kingdom.  For the first time in an adventure Mario and Luigi will helping Bowser in travelling to different part inside Bowser’s body to help him gain abilities and strengths to achieve a common goal.  Although notion of travelling around a body to complete some quest is quite odd, but that is charm of a Mario game: Strange and Funny ideas.  With the hilarious dialogues to actions of the characters that drive the story, this game will bring smiles or giggles to you from start to end.

Graphics:
The movement and animation are extremely fluid and comical as usual being a Mario title.  You control Mario and Luigi inside of Bowser in 2D graphics while you control Bowser in a 3D Fashion.  This adds a great variety of presentation as well as distinguishing the two teams.   Anytime during the game, you can switch between the brothers and Bowser between the two screens.  This is a critical element within the game to mend the stories together.  The use of the dual screens to tell the two separate storylines is a very nicely thought out effort by Nintendo.

Sound:
The music to the game is fantastic!  It really keeps you in an energetic mood ready to play more.  The sound effects and dialogue are hilarious and hold many of the classic Mario and Luigi moments that really make the game entertaining.  Although this game does not use full voice acting like many of the newer RPG games, it uses recognizable gibberish sound effects to portray both Mario and Luigi that is charming and unique to this game.  Nonetheless, the classic sounds from the original Mario series like the jump, stomping on shells, and hammer sound effects will put a smile on anyone that has played a Mario Video game.

Gameplay:
The gameplay for this title is extremely creative.  You will play as Bowser and Mario Bros.  Bowser is far more powerful than Mario and Luigi, but he doesn’t get a combo attacks like the Mario Bros where you can kick a green turtle shell back and forth between the two brothers to inflict more damage on your enemies.  Rhythm and timing is a critical element in this game to correctly work the battle system.  Adding to the battle system, a counter attack is added to the battle.  During boss action sequences the two screens are put to use when Bowser and Mario both fighting separate battles, but cooperating to take out a common enemy.  Furthermore the use of mini games seems to be a secondary focus for the game.  Another fun part of the gameplay is when you play as Giant Bowser, where you hold the DS like a book and use stylus for a punch action and the microphone for breathing fire.

Longevity:
Aside from the fact that you will continue to level up your character like a tradition RPG game, you won’t believe how many extra hours are packed into the game in collecting special items such as beans, hidden treasure boxes, Mushroom Orbs, and more.  Also, the new badge system has more purpose than collecting new badges as you progress within the game.  These badges allow your characters to activate bonuses depending on the battle situation.  This main storyline will take at least twenty plus hours to finish. But for true RPG fans who want to complete everything within the game, Mario and Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story provides great replay value.

Conclusion:

Mario and Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story is game that nicely incorporates different elements from the classical Mario games and RPG games like Zelda.  The improved and extended use of action in previous Nintendo RPG titles like Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi Partners in Time makes this game truly unique in the console-style RPG category.  With the charms of the delightful Mario sound effects and humorous character interaction, this game will make you giggle as your progress through the story.  It does not matter if you like Mario games or RPG games; this is a great and refreshing game for any video gamer.
