Presentation:

The game brings the radical and surreal fantasy illustration to live by weaving an amazing story about a band technician warped into a heavy metal fantasy world. The game world design creatively infuses icons of heavy metal culture into an otherwise cliché medieval fantasy world.  From the very beginning, the story is presented in a unique way.  The story starts as Jack Black shows the player to a record store about the best record ever made called Brutal Legends.  As you pick up the Brutal Legends record, the album cover becomes the menu of the game.  The humorous dialogue and comments throughout your adventure with Jack Black’s voiceovers will make you laugh continuously.  Extravagant explosion sounds and visual effects with non-stop metal music make the whole game feel like one giant flashy concert.

Gameplay:

This title is a combination of many genres of games, some of it includes: Real Time Strategy, Hack n’ Slash, Free-form Racing, and an added role-playing level up and customization system all combined into one title.  The game is presented as an open world action adventure game, but the other genres of gameplay are blended into it in a well-planned manner.  You will play briefly on the multiple genres as the game progresses.  Each gameplay element is kept simple and forgiving to make the game enjoyable and lighthearted. Aside from the main story of the game, many secondary missions are offered to help you level up and customize your character from your special moves to the look and feel of your weapons.  These additional missions are just long enough to keep things interesting and not repetitive.  Although there are a lot of elements within the game like multiple type weapons and units, the controls are not overly complex and are extremely intuitive.

Graphics:

The graphics are crisp and detailed for the type of art style.  Although the characters are not offered in the traditional realistic fashion like most games today, it is stylized in a comedic and cartoon looking perspective with out of proportion faces and bodies.  This is a perfectly suited way to tell the exaggerated and otherworldly fantasy tale.  The use of special lighting and reflective textures of the objects within the world brings the fascinating game world to life. It is amazingly imaginative of the artist of the game to blend the car engines, speakers, concert stages and gothic items into the game environment. It is as if all the art elements from the cover of a heavy metal album were brought to life.

Sound:

The selection of game music is an exciting and energetic collection of heavy metal music.  Even if you are not a fan of the metal music, you find yourself eventually bobbing your head to the beat of the dynamic musical selection from the various tasks you are set out to do. The music is the perfect match for the story and action of the game.  The use of directional sound within the game is perhaps one of the best examples I’ve seen in a while used within a game. The surround sound goes on full blast while you are inside your car, but the music follows the car as soon as you jump out. And when fighting enemies you can hear every individual unit approaching from various distinct directions approaching you. The NPC game dialogue that reacts to the style that you play is extremely hilarious and relevant to in game events. Even if some of the dialog files are used more than once, they never sound repetitive or sound like standard phrase one liner like most other games due to their hilarity.

Conclusion:

Double Fine Productions did an excellent job of creating an extremely stylish gameworld that incorporates a variety of game genres. If you’re feeling adventurous and looking for a fun packed adventure that incorporates a broad range of gameplay this game is definitely for you.  With endless hours of laughs and head bobbing to the fantastic soundtrack packed into the game this is a must get title for anyone who loves and appreciates great music.  Be sure to pick up a copy of the best musical journey to come to console on October 13th.
