(http://www.unchartedthegame.com) For Mature Audience 17 and over.  For a sequel that is released 2 years after its original, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is certainly well worth the wait. Many aspects of the original game (Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune) had been improved, and extra elements are added into this game to make it an even better package. On the first look, Uncharted 2 might seem like your average adventure movie type game. But between its cleverly planned storyline, well-developed characters, excellent gameplay, and its overall highly detailed production, this game offers so many thrills and drama that it puts movies likes Indiana Jones to shame. While the game is named as a sequel, Uncharted 2 does not make new players feel alienated or confused because the developers implemented the original characters smoothly to ease new and old players into the dynamics between the characters. As a game itself, Uncharted 2 incorporates elements from a variety of genres, namely 3D platforming,  third person shooter, puzzle-solving, and even some RPG-like story telling. Naughty Dog had shown itself to be capable of high quality production by implementing each of these elements at a level that are comparable to each of these genre’s representative titles.

Presentation:

There is one thing that can be said about this game as a whole – high quality effort. Many aspects of this game, character design, plot development, graphics, sounds, as well as gameplay, are shown to be thoroughly planned. The characters have strong personalities, much of that is shown in their clever comments throughout the game. Furthermore, emotion shown in the dialogs brings the character even closer to life. The storyline of the game unfolds at an excitingly fast pace, which keeps the players interested. Even with a complex story and profound characters, there is minimal wait time even if cutscenes are included. The pacing of the whole product is woven so well together that the flow of the entire game is seamless. Realism in Uncharted 2 is not limited to its seamless flow and larger than life characters, its combat feature destructible environment and collateral damage that keep combat situations unpredictable.

Graphics:

Naughty Dog is able to use its improved game engine for both cutscenes and normal gameplay, which contributes to the seamlessness of the game. The textures and lighting are more than detailed: from the rust on the iron, to the chipped paint on old buildings, to the ornate decorations in the temples, or to the subtle discoloration of bronze statue, none of them look any less real than the reality. The character models are highly detailed with facial expressions and wrinkles where they are appropriate. Details are also paid to various effects weathers and terrains have on the characters’ appearance, not only that, the slain enemy occupy space and are moved realistically according to the game’s physics engine.  But the most impressive of the game’s graphical achievement is that there is no frame rate drop even with all these details.

Gameplay:

While Uncharted 2’s gameplay draws inspiration from multiple genres, none of them feel any less than what one would expect from a full package. Its third person shooter combat is versatile and balanced, melee, stealth, shooting are often all viable in any given battlefield. The melee combat is simple, yet engaging. While the melee combo system from the previous entry of the series is gone, the melee combat is much more than brainless button smashing. For the gunslingers, there is a fair variety of guns to suit different style of shooters as well as situations. Furthermore, the game balance that by limiting the amount of ammunition as well as weapons one can carry, therefore forces the player to develop strategies for each battle. As a 3D platformer, the game’s clever use of camera angle and color schemes makes itself comparable to the best of the platformers. Taking platforming one step further, the platforming sequences are far from being dull as many thrilling surprises keep the players’ eyes wide open. And should the player become lost at any point, the game’s progressive hint system will point in the right direction after giving ample time for the player to attempt the puzzles.

Just as Uncharted 2’s single player campaign is overwhelmingly addictive, online multiplayer, which is new to the series, is just as good. While there is no story element to mention in this game’s multiplayer mode, its multi-level stages, and acrobatic maneuvers differentiate Uncharted 2 from the average shooters. Also worth mentioning is its generous variety of multiplayer contents extends so well to cover interests for the competitive, co-operative, and even the MMORPGs loving players. The usual concern for lag in online gaming is non-existent when the reviewers tested out the game.

Sound:

This aspect of Uncharted 2 can also be summarized much like all other aspects of this game – highly detailed. The voice actors did an excellent job of portraying the unique personalities and emotions of each of the characters, the player can easily hear the female protagonist’s desperation should the main character leap into one of the rare bottomless pits. Attention is paid to replicate an environment’s acoustics, the dialogs sound real whether it takes place in a ruin’s interior, a sewer, or an open field. While the orchestral scores are grand and outstanding on their own, it complements the gameplay and adds to the overall experience. Uncharted 2’s music changes keep the players’ mood in sync with the protagonist’s as it sets mood for dangerous situations as well as plot development.

Longevity:

If Uncharted 2’s excellent gameplay and emotionally charged story is not reason enough to replay it, there are 100 trophies tucked away throughout the game and a bonus system for the collectors and the perfect achievers. On top of that, there are power-ups available for both single player campaign and multiplayer mode. It’s up to the players to decide whether to better equip themselves for a second play through or to tackle the higher difficulties.
