Presentation:

For those of you familiar with the past PSP Grand Theft Auto series titles, this time you will not find the traditional behind the back third-person perspective view, or voice acted cut scenes.  Chinatown Wars is played very much like the original Grand Theft Auto original titles from an angled top-down perspective, but with an updated 3D look and Hollywood blockbuster camera angle work added to make the adventure look and feel somewhat like a movie.  From the name of stores, to the brand of technologies all the way to the spam e-mail that you will receive throughout the game, it is apparent that Rockstar put a lot of thought into the thought into the small details when putting together the look and feel of the life to the environments of Liberty City which really makes the adventure one of a kind.

Gameplay:

The intuitive controls of this title is perhaps what makes this title so much fun to play keeping the player interested for hours of gameplay.  From hotwiring cars, making motlov cocktails, digging through dumpsters, scratching off lotto tickets, all the way to trying to escape from bring trapped inside a car by kicking out the windows, you utilize the shoulder and analog stick on the PSP which really adds a unique factor to the player interaction portion.  You will never get tired of doing any of these tasks throughout missions because there are just so many things to do within the city that requires your interaction.  Another great new feature added now is the fact that you can lower your wanted level when being chased by the police by ramming and taking out their cars which really makes focusing on completing missions easier especially when you accidentally break the law along the way.

Graphics:

Although the graphics of this latest GTA portable installment isn’t the usual out of this world ultra realistic graphics, please keep in mind that this is a Nintendo DS conversion.  The story is presented in a comic book/animated film style which really sheds new light on a new game style that clearly proves to work well for this title.  Don’t let the portable factor of this game fool you, Rockstar does not hold back on the amount of details packed into the game from having an extensive GPS/PDA system, to recreating the original Liberty City to be a full scale city for the player to discover.  If you have played previous titles from the Grand Theft Auto series you will truly appreciate just how much work was put into this game and the best part is that you can play this anywhere.

Sound:

Although you will not find the traditional voice acting like most GTA titles of the past, you can always count on Rockstar to deliver a vividly complex and in-depth storyline element to the game.  The character dialogue is extremely witty and comical keeping you immersed in the game play while laughing as you grow with the characters throughout this comic book style GTA adventure.  The music is also very fitting for the genre of this title.  You will hear a lot of dynamic upbeat oriental type music that really completes the feel of the adventure keeping you on the edge of your seat not knowing what to expect next.

Longevity:

With the Wifi capability of the PSP hardware, the Rockstar Social Network is a great addition for this title, not only will you be able to compare the amount of drugs you sold, cars you blew up and many more in game stats.  Another great added feature to the online portion of this game is the ability to get more missions and GTA in world mini games available (ex: laundry catching game, pancake making game and much more) to you for being a member of the Rockstar Social Network.  Packed with 6 multiplayer modes playing with friends online is another option.   Race them through the streets of Liberty City or even compete to be the first to get your hands on a stash of contraband stashed away somewhere throughout the city.  If that’s not enough for you there is also a nicely built in drug trade system within the game where you can buy/sell drugs throughout Liberty City to establish a name for yourself in the city.  Buy while prices are low and sell when there’s a huge demand for your products to buy the cars and weapons that you desire most.

Conclusion:

I have not had so much fun from playing a portable title in so long!  I highly recommend this title to anyone looking for a great action adventure game to take along with them that has a great storyline element built in, and especially to those who are fans of the previous GTA titles.  You will get hours of gameplay both online/offline.  You will find yourself forgetting at times that you are playing a PSP game because of the endless possibilities and activities possible with GTA: Chinatown Wars.
