Heavy Rain is truly the next generation state-of-the-art cinematic action thriller adventure, all made possible by Quantic Dream for the PS3, the developer behind the critically acclaimed game title: Fahrenheit.  Presented much like a cinematic movie that you find in theatres today, the game revolves around a sophisticated plot involving four main characters intertwined with one another to solve the case of the mysterious Origami Killer.  As you assume the role these four characters you will be faced with many moral and life changing decisions.  The character development, and multiple twists and turns in the story will hook you in a way very few games can.  Every decision you make will affect how the rest of this story unfolds.  What will you do?

Presentation:

Right out of the box, this game is eerie!  As you probably already know most PS3 games require an install before you can play.   Quantic Dream has provided a pretty unique activity to pass the time while this takes place.  Out of the box you are provided with a piece of blood stained origami paper.  While undergoing installation you are taught how to fold the very same origami figure as seen on the box art of Heavy Rain.  This is a great souvenir to keep on your desk while you unravel the mystery behind the Origami Killer.

Graphics:

The graphics are top notch and is definitely one of the best that I have seen to date on the Playstation 3.  The level of detail and extreme camera angles brought into play for Heavy Rain really establish games as a viewable media comparable to the movie realm.  With tight cinematic camera angles at times it was a bit hard to see what was going on in tight spaces.  This can be easily fixed by hitting a button to change views.  However it would have been nice to see the camera angles a little more self adjusting to the in-game environments to make the viewing experience easier on the player.  All aside, Quantic Dream has definitely set a new bar in graphics presentation with many game studios to follow I’m sure.

Sounds:

The music score to Heavy Rain is extremely dynamic, setting the scene for the player in each and every scene.  In any given situation the music will imprint any imaginable emotion for the player whether it is an intense suspenseful sequence or a romantic dialogue, the game does a good job at making the player’s experience truly immersive.  The in-game dialog/voice acting is spectacular.  The dialogue delivery is extremely natural, making you truly question whether this is a movie or game.

Gameplay:

The controls to the game utilize a not so traditional layout.  Instead of using the traditional left analog stick to control direction and manipulate walking movement, Quantic Dream utilizes the R2 button to control the walking movement and the analog sticks to control head and looking movements, along with action executions throughout the game.  Although the layout is somewhat new and unfamiliar territory to most, you will quickly grow accustomed to the setup due to its intuitive layout.  Unlike most other games, Heavy Rain is a great experience for not just the player, but it is also very enjoyable to watch as well.  During our review it was hard to put down the controller, but when sitting back to watch the gameplay we felt like we were watching the latest action thriller in theatres.

Longevity:

The possibilities in this game are endless.  Once you have completed the story first time around, you will be able to go back through the game by chapter and re-experience the thrill by making different decisions that could change the course of your story in Heavy Rain entirely.  If that isn’t enough, bonus content such as concept art and videos of “making of Heavy Rain” can be unlocked for completing the story a certain way much like the bonus content found from a DVD.  Playing such a magnificent masterpiece that Quantic Dream has put together makes watching the videos very enjoyable, seeing the behind the scenes footage of how all this was made possible.  If all this extra material is not enough for you, Quantic Dream has plans for additional downloadable content chapters as well to further feed your fascination with the Origami Killer!

Conclusion:

Heavy Rain is the next generation of gaming that will blur the distinction between movies and games.  With its interactive control scheme and Hollywood styled murder mystery plot, this story driven title differentiates itself with many popular gaming titles.  Unlike many video game simplistic storylines where a hero’s mission is to save the world, this game involves a complex development and morale choices of each game character tied with a dreary and realistic setting.  This might not be the game for the gamers seeking instant action, but it will stand strong as a dark adventure with a strong story.  Be a part of history and experience what will be the beginning of a new genre that will revolutionize how film and gaming will be combined.  Be sure to pick up this highly anticipated PS3 exclusive in stores now!
