The musical portrays the experience and the struggles that African Americans had to go through during the 1960s to get their music to the broader audience. Though it is dated back half a century, the story is still relatable and speaks volumes to today’s audience. Especially during the song “Listen”, which was Beyoncé’s dramatic solo for the 2006 movie, its new lyrics for the duet in this Dreamgirls tour is able to bring a sensational message to the second act.

Dynamically and dramatically staged, only 5 panels are used to create a fluid and super cinematic stage for the production. The LED panels move brilliantly so to change the shape of the stage, determine the location and the architecture of the set, and add an impressive backdrop to the play. Together with a creative and flashy lighting, glamorous fashion design, minimal props, and splendid singing and choreography; everything come together fantastically for this new rendition of Dreamgirls.

Director-choreographer Robert Longbottom’s tour is a revitalizing one. It is cast with perfection and blessed with a wonderful visual style and musical magnificence. This faithful rendition and creative show will thoroughly satisfy the loyal fans; while newcomers can anticipate the realization of an imaginative dream.
