(www.lostplanet2game.com/) Rated Teen by ESRB. Capcom PR Manager Brian Keltner and Community Specialist Shawn Baxter were in our office Friday April 30 to showcase the up and coming third-person shooter Lost Planet 2.

Soon as we started, the Capcom representatives informed us on one of the game’s main changes from its predecessor. Instead of a pre-made protagonist, Lost Planet 2 features a highly customizable hero/heroine. While you can’t scan your face onto the body of a lady pirate, there are plenty of changes that can be made. For a starter, the colors of clothing can be changed independently as well as the clothing itself; a sort of branching skill tree that will allow for play style customization; emotes, taunts, and equipments to further personalize the character; and highly variable controls to suit the needs of every player.

On top of changeable character models, there are also unlockable characters from other Capcom titles – Dead Rising, Gears of War, Resident Evil, and Monster Hunter. Too bad for Devil May Cry fans, Dante is not to be found in the list of guest characters. The player character will be shown with all the hand-picked personal touches through all the cutscenes since the entire game is rendered using the in-game engine.

For Capcom fans, there is another appreciation token. With a save file of another Capcom game, the player will be given a special secret bonus depending on the save file(s).

Taking suggestions and feedbacks from the community, another huge focus of Lost Planet 2 is its multiplayer modes. The entire campaign can be played through in co-op mode with 2 player split-screen or with internet connection for up to 4 players. With that idea in mind through the development process, the enemies intelligently seek out different targets to make sure everyone is well occupied.

We had to chance to play through a section of one of the chapters, complete with a mini-boss fight at the end. Even though the difficulty was set on easy, the effort and time it took was far more than the bosses of many other games. In that regard, it’s almost like Lost Planet 2 took some elements from the popular Monster Hunter series. Although mastering the game will be similarly difficult, thankfully the customizable control makes it much easier to start with.

Then of course, there is competitive play. Lost Planet 2 features 16-player multiplayer matches with nine different maps and 5 different game modes including Data Post Battle, Akrid Egg Battle, Fugitive, Elimination and Team Elimination.

The game is set 10 years after the events of the original Lost Planet. The fighting rages on as the ice age slowly melts away. The warmer climate allows for a larger variety of background areas: arid deserts, jungles, and of course the snow lands. Through the campaign, the player will witness civil war unfold among 6 factions, some formed after the events from the original Lost Planet. All the while as colonization efforts continue to battle the native Akrid, who came back stronger than ever.
