Presentation:

As soon as you start playing, you will need to create a character to represent yourself. Character creation allows customization of your appearance by choosing different face, hair, skin tone, outfit and even the voice. This game does not revolve around an epic storyline. Instead, the player will complete quest given by villagers and hunter’s guild. The main focus of this game is to complete all quests and try to get different materials to build the better weapons, armors, and items. Materials are not easy to get though, as for some rare items are acquired through fighting higher level monsters and drops randomly.

Graphic:

Monster Hunter brings you some of the best graphic on the Wii system. The scenic views in the game world are just stunning. The vibrant colors and visual effects from different environments give you an immersive experience. In the desert, you will feel the desolate heat through the twisting sands and heat waves. As you venture through exotically colored trees and ever flowing waterfalls, you will experience lush and lively forest. Through falling snowflakes and trailing winds, you must battle through the harsh snow mountain. The game designers really put a lot of effort in trying to make players feel the surroundings of the game world. Each monster are truly menacing through their unique representation, models, and colors. Not to mention, as the player acquire new weapons and armors, each individual piece of gear will be reflected on the character with its distinctive design. Each piece of armor and weapon will reflect materials collected from the original monster.  The pride and joy of dawning an armor or weapon collected from a high level monster is truly unprecedented and a true accolade.

Sound:

The developer did a great job on sound effect. Although the music can easily be overheard, each piece of music is beautifully orchestrated.  Each map gives you a different piece of music that matches the scenery. The fighting score is composed with such spirit and liveliness that it will awaken the might and gives you courage to defeat the monster.  Every environment has a set of sound effects.  From the howling sounds of the sandstorms in the desert to the dripping water sound inside a cave, the sound effects makes the game come alive. Capcom has put a lot of effort in engineering the best music and sound effects for this game.  From the result, they did not disappoint.

Gameplay:

As the gamplay and mechanics are similar to pervious version of the series, Monster Hunter Tri allows veteran players to use the traditional gamepad scheme through the Classic controller and Classic Controller Pro.  The Classic Controller Pro is the better choice as its buttons and control layout are more ergonomic. For the new players and hardcore fans who would like to try something different, they can play the game using the Wiimote and Nunchucks. The Wiimote control option requires a lot of intense action as you will swing and slash the controller to perform different actions in the game.  Although the idea is novel, the control can prove tiring and imprecise through a long battle.

Neglecting which control peripheral you choose, the game will familiarize you with your controls and chosen weapon through tutorial quests. After completion of tutorial quests, you can start doing quests from The Guild. There are several types of quests:  gathering quests, hunting quests, and trapping quests. Completing a series of specific quests will allow one to embark on an “Urgent Quest” which will allow your character to progress to the next level of quests to fight higher level monsters.

Preparation and strategy is the key to victory. Players will be busy gathering materials to prior to each hunt. For example, herbs and mushrooms will be useful in making potions to recover health point and various other medicines will give stat boost when fighting a formidable beast. The right combination of items and weapons will make a big difference in the outcome of each battle.

When fighting a monster on a quest, players must first find location of the monster as they will roam around on the map randomly.  Once the monster has been located, your hero must deal enough damage to either kill it or weaken it to be captured. There is no save points and supplies are limited in each quest. Players must bring their best fighting skills along with experience they learn about the environments and the behavioral pattern of each monster to achieve victory. Once the monster has been defeated, material carved from each fallen monster can be taken to the Blacksmith to create new weapons and armors. Beside monster parts, each weapons and armors require additional materials foraged and collected in the game world. Although it take a quite a few quest before you can create an item, but experience and journey make each crafted item truly rewarding.

Armors and weapons do more than just fighting and protection. Each piece of item actually contains skill points. By equipping different armaments to increase skill points, you will activate skill attributes. These skill ranges from additional attack or defense points to automatic monster location or quick on spot healing. Different armors and weapons sets will offer you different skill sets. You can wear a full set of armor with fix sets of skills or you have to mix and match different parts to create individualized skills sets. As some materials are harder to collect, hunter must think and plan carefully with desired skill sets before crafting armaments.

Innovation:

In Monster Hunter Tri, characters can swim and fight underwater. This is a new feature to the series. When you are in the water, your movements and actions will be completely different from being on the ground. There are a few monsters that only appear in the water.  In order to collect parts from these monsters, hunters must get used to the fighting style in water.

Multiplayer mode is an intricate part of the game. In this game, there are 2 types of multiplayer mode. One is arena fight. Two players can play on split screen with one console to defeat a monster. The other type is online play. When you are online, you will find different servers with communities of people who can do quests together with you. The online quests are usually harder than offline quests. So, cooperating with 3 other teammates will help immensely helpfl and will add a new depth to the game.

One of monster hunter series’ signature elements are the weapons. In Monster Hunter Tri, Dual sword, Bow, Hunting Horn and Gun Lance has been removed. Great sword, Long Sword, Sword & Shield, Lance, bow Gun, and Hammer are still there. Switch Axe is new weapon to the game. Switch Axe is a weapon with 2 modes – Axe and Sword. Player can switch between axe and sword mode during the quest. When in axe mode, you walk like playing Lance but the fighting movement is much different from lance. When in sword mode, you look like you are holding a great sword. There is a power charging system for this weapon. You charge the power by using axe, and discharge the power by using sword. Different Switch Axes have different charge attributes that will boost raw attack power or boost element attack. It is a very different and welcomed addition to the existing line of weapons.

Longevity:

The play time of Monster Hunter Tri can easy to get up to 100+ hours. There are many skilled hunters have even 1000s of hours of play time on record. Monster Hunter Tri will also give you endless play hours. With building new gears, doing quests, and online quests with friends or other players, you will never get bored.

Conclusion:

Let the hunting begin now. If you have played Monster Hunter series before, you probably already own this game. If you have not played this game yet, you should give it a try if you like character growth and RPG elements instead of an epic story. It is not just an action RPG game. It is an online community for gamers who enjoy an atypical video game that mainly focuses on true gaming skills and cooperative team play between players.
