Census workers are nearly three-quarters complete with gathering 2010 Census information from households that did not mail back their questionnaires.

US Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves announced that census workers nationwide have conducted more than 35 million interviews and collected information from 74.6 percent of the households that didn’t mail back their 2010 Census forms – outpacing the projected timeline. Census officials had set a goal of reaching 54 percent of households before June.

Census workers began making in-person visits May 1, collecting information from households that did not mail back their 2010 Census forms and following up with households that submitted incomplete forms. The personnel-intensive operation – referred to as Non-Response Follow-Up (NRFU) – is part of the Bureau’s wide-scale effort to count every person living in the United States. NRFU operations are scheduled to end July 10.

Census takers only will ask questions that pertain to the 10-question form: name, age, birth date, ethnicity, race, whether the household rents or owns and if anyone in the household lives elsewhere part of the time. All census workers carry an ID badge that contains a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, a black and white canvas bag that bears the US Census Bureau logo and the phone numbers of their local census office and supervisor.

All census workers take an oath to not reveal any personally identifiable data with anyone. Census workers will never ask to come into your home. And, the Bureau will never ask for money or conduct surveys on behalf of a political party.
