The highly anticipated Apple iPhone 4G launched last Thursday on June 24th. Its popularity is bigger than ever, blatantly evident in the length of the line observed outside of the Apple Store. At least that is the case at its Downtown Bellevue store, which is just a few blocks west of the Bellevue Campus of one of Apple’s competitor – Microsoft.

The iPhone 4 doubles the display resolution of 3Gs. It comes with a 5 megapixels camera that has the ability to focus by tapping on the touch screen, and has LED flash. Video recording is improved with a front VGA camera – which supports its FaceTime video calling – and the backside camera is capable of HD video recording at 720p. Full comparison can be found on Apple’s website here.

According to one of the overnight campers, who claimed to be first in line for the last iPhone launch, the line started about 14 hours earlier this time. They arrived at about 9 pm the night before launch both times, but the line is about 20 people longer this time around. The first person in line was here since 7:30 am of the day before launch.

The official first-person-in-line is a junior from Bellevue High School, Curren Mehta, who was there with his friend from Interlake High School, Ajay Solanky. The two took turns to wait in line while the other shopped in the mall in order to pass the 24 hours waiting marathon. Mehta had been saving up for an iPhone in the last few months, and thought that getting an iPhone would be a great way to start off his summer vacation.

There was plenty of enthusiasm for the new apple product. Many of the campers are returning customers, looking forward to the upgrade. Quite a few Apple fans were showing off their recently purchased iPad, the conversations were not so much different from those heard in an Apple Store.

The store was expecting a crowd, but the turn out was even greater. The Bellevue Square Apple Store had sold out their entire stock of iPhone 4 by Friday morning. The next shipment of the new iPhone 4 will not arrive until mid July.
