How about you take out some of your aggression on a stuffed animal? If that’s not enough, you could always go out and buy Artificial Minds and Movement’s newest game, Naughty Bear. In Naughty Bear, you are given a safe and perfectly legal environment in which you can murder, maim, and scare to death an entire island populated by teddy bears. While some may consider the practice of teddy bear massacre to be “psychotic”, the juxtaposition of horror and children’s story book setting is a stroke of sheer genius and provides hours of delightfully wicked fun.

Presentation:
Your character, Naughty Bear, lives on Paradise Island, where a colony of cuddly teddy bears lives in relative peace. I say relative peace because every once in a while, Naughty Bear decides that enough is enough and goes on a bit of a killing spree. Your wrath might be motivated by their recent efforts to exterminate you, or perhaps the fact that you just didn’t get invited to that birthday party you really wanted to go to. Naughty Bear’s psychotic rage and desire to remove the fluffing from every other teddy bear in sight is probably the most adorable and disturbing thing we’ve seen from the video game industry in a long time.

The most striking feature of Naughty Bear is the atmosphere it presents. In the beginning and throughout the game, yours and the other bears’ actions are narrated by a mysterious bodiless voice, much like the narrators of small children’s TV shows. The act of murdering innocent teddy bears isn’t inherently fun in and of itself. However, the hilarity of shoving a helpless little teddy bear into a cake mixer while the narrator cheers for more blood is truly remarkable. With its cutesy setting, cast of adorable teddy bears, and gruesome, fluffy murders, Naughty Bear is the perfect example of a toddler’s bedtime story gone wrong.

Graphics:
Aesthetics are important in a game such as this, because the details alone provide half of the entertainment value. Your gruesome murders are made all the more enjoyable by the horrified expressions on your victims’ adorable faces as you curb stomp them or rip them to shreds with an axe. And the clouds of stuffing that fly from their bodies while you assault them are extremely pleasing. The simplistic and sweet 3d art style suits the atmosphere and wouldn’t be better any other way.

Sounds:
Naughty Bear’s music consists of the sort of delightfully charming tunes that you might have heard while watching TV as a toddler. It’s filled with happy melodies and adorable sounds, which are the perfect contrast to your acts of insane violence. During gameplay you can also use sound to help find the screaming teddy bears and put them out of their misery. In addition, you can use the power of sound to yell “BOO!” and scare the stuffing out of your enemies. Just like its visual aspects, Naughty Bear’s audio is cute and delightfully naughty, making it a joy to play.

Gameplay:
Naughty Bear’s gameplay is as simple as its childish atmosphere. The game is separated into seven episodes, each with several sections. The teddy bears in each episode get steadily more epic as you progress from Ninja bears, to Zombears, to Robears and more. Each section plays out exactly the same as the rest in the episode, except that they have different special goals to accomplish in each. For example, you might have to accomplish the mission without being seen, without actually attacking any bears, or even drive every bear in the episode insane. Your performance in each section will earn you trophies, and trophies unlock new episodes and sections so you can continue the story. While this method is fun and encourages you to replay older episodes so you can unlock new ones, unlocking new episodes sometimes takes a little longer than anticipated.

Once you start an episode, you will travel from location to location, scaring and slaying teddy bears to make a path to one specific bear that deserves punishment. The fun in the game comes from the creativity in the way you accomplish your mischief. The world is your oyster and you can massacre those bears any way you want to. You can sabotage objects for the bears to find and attempt to fix, and then murder the unsuspecting victim. Or you could lay a trap, wait for a bear to fall in it, and then execute any bear that dares help him. And running straight into the biggest group with a machete and hacking them all to bits is always an option. There are hundreds of different ways to slaughter those innocent teddy bears, each one more hilarious and naughty than the last.

Longevity:
As you progress throughout the game, you unlock different costumes for Naughty Bear to wear. Each costume gives you different bonuses that’ll help you complete your goals, so unlocking them is very useful. As mentioned earlier, just completing the game alone requires that you replay episodes multiple times so the game does take quite awhile to finish. But even after you complete the game, you still can try to get better scores in all the episodes. All scores are uploaded to a leader board, so you can keep playing and playing until you have reached the top.

Conclusion:
Naughty Bear is a wonderful game. Hearing the title alone is enough to inspire curiosity, and the thought of an insane teddy bear tearing his brethren to shreds is an idea that is both unique and amazing. Naughty Bear gets kudos right out of the gates by those merits alone. And as gameplay progresses, it gets better and better as you find new and interesting ways to murder those cuddly little stuffed animals. Just watching this game is a delight and you will probably never look at teddy bears the same way again.
