(Edited from Xinhua, Pyongyang) The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) condemned the joint U.S-South Korea military exercises Wednesday, saying it was an “intolerable martial provocation”, the official news agency KCNA reported.

“The military exercise is a nuclear test war with large-[numbers of] modern troops involved. Live shells are being used under the simulated conditions, which are aimed at mounting a preemptive attack,” said a spokesman for the National Peace Committee of the DPRK.

The spokesman said the exercises now being staged under the pretext of the sinking of South Korean warship the Cheonan clearly proved how mad the South and its ally had gone in preparing for war.

He said the army and people of the DPRK would never remain an onlooker to the U.S.-South Korean military provocation and war moves but would deal unpredictable, severe blows to the enemy any moment from any place.

A spokesman for the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army released a statement on Aug. 15 accusing the joint exercises, named Ulji Freedom Guardian, as a lead-up to “all-out war”.

“The military exercises represent the phase of practical actions aimed at a full-dressed military invasion,” the spokesman said.

Ulji Freedom Guardian, being held from Aug. 16 to 26, involves more than 30,000 U.S. and 56,000 South Korean soldiers.
