Red Faction Armageddon (www.redfaction.com/games/red-faction-armageddon) Rated M for Mature by ESRB. Red Faction Armageddon is the second installment in the Red Faction series, taking place on a colony on Mars, fifty years after the first Red Faction. The hero, Darius, is the grandson of two heroes from the previous game, so there are some story line references to the previous installment. However, this Red Faction has linear level progression, unlike its predecessors which had some free roam.

Presentation:
To set the stage, this installment finds a group of colonists fighting Adam Hale, and his cult called the Marauders. No one really knows what evil the Marauders are up to, but they open the game by destroying the Terraformer, an atmospheric system that made Mars’ environment inhabitable and bearable. Without it, Darius and the colonists are forced underground to survive. Next, Darius then gets tricked into a job by Hale and the Marauders. Once underground, Darius accidentally uncovers monstrous aliens. Hale and his group of separatists have plans for these monsters, and Darius is out to find out what, while trying to save the colonists in the meantime.

Graphics:
It’s fairly easy to spot out bad guys from good guys in this game. Hale’s separatists group don heavy, menacing armor and give off a red glow, whereas the good colonists wear common armor and clothes, and also tend to have blue accents on them. As for the evil aliens, spotting them isn’t really a problem in the least: they’re loud, ugly, and usually tend to find you first.

Some of Red Faction takes place underground in caverns, ice caves, or alien infested areas. It is important to note that there are surface levels, too, so you’re not always stuck in the subterranean realm. The game is set in the mid 2100’s, so people have some futuristic tech gear and weapons. The colony and structures feel like a poor, run down society, so nothing seems very perfect, clean, or in stellar shape. The visuals are really good though, and there’s no complaining here about graphics or anything of that matter.

Gameplay:
Red Faction Armageddon is played from a third person perspective, and the camera is controlled with the right thumb stick. It does a wonderful job, and doesn’t get stuck in any critical situations. This game plays like any other standard third person shooter, so anybody familiar with those should have no problem here.

Red Faction Armageddon has no competitive multiplayer, but it does have an online and local co-op game mode called infestation mode. Up to 4 people can play this game mode, where you fight through wave after wave of enemy aliens, and unlock upgrades as you progress. There’s also a fun score-competitive mode called ruin mode. In this mode it’s just you against yourself, trying to rack up points by destroying as much of the landscape as you can within the time limit. This mode is really entertaining and different. It’s enjoyable to try and continually beat your high scores, since the methods of destroying the map are near endless.

Innovation:
On the front, Red Faction may seem to be a decent-looking game, but beyond the graphics lay an awesome destructibility engine. Almost every building and structure (if not all) can be destroyed to bits and pieces in Red Faction Armageddon. If you blast it, the structure might get a hole in it, or fall to pieces, or topple over, all based upon how you happen to hit it. The developers really wanted to show off this engine, and totally supply you with the tools to enjoy its destructive displays to the max.

The weapons in Red Faction are really fun for causing destruction, as well as for blasting aliens. The fun is almost endless with weapon and nanoforge upgrades for Darius. Such weapons include the plasma cannon, the singularity cannon–the list goes on and on. My personal favorite is a very unique weapon called the magnet gun. It can attach two objects or structures together, acting to pull one to the other. This gun is a lot of fun with a game that features such a heavy infusion of destructibility. Darius also has nanoforge abilities as well, which can shockwave enemies, create a protective shell around him, push enemies back, and much more. Another impressive ability that the nanoforge has is to repair destroyed structures. So if there’s a broken bridge, you can use your nanoforge to restore it back to tip-top shape.

Conclusion:
Overall, Red Faction Armageddon is an extremely entertaining, destructive third person space shooter. Even though its online modes are all essentially co-op, it still has a long shelf life, with lots of replay ability, especially in the awesome ruin mode. This shooter should help ease your game-pain, given the lack of good shooters that have been released recently, but also opens you up to one of the coolest destructivity engines in any game out in today’s marketplace.
