Gotham City Impostors (www.gothamcityimpostors.com) Rated T for Teen by ESRB. Who can resist Batman? The Dark Knight’s iconic cowl and black cape make bad guys tremble and ignite the imaginations of practically everyone. So the set up for Gotham City imposters isn’t quite as farfetched as you might imagine. Groups of vigilantes, rallying under the symbol of Batman have taken up arms (since nonlethal options were a little overpriced) and are fighting the Joker Gang in the streets of Gotham. The ensuing chaos is what Gotham City Imposters is all about. Insanity and wackiness ensues in the battle for the streets of Gotham.

Presentation:
Gotham City Impostors does have a story, however short and shallow it may be. In a story that’s apparently straight from DC’s Detective Comics, Gotham’s citizens have taken Batman and the Joker’s fight into their own hands. They’ve taken up arms and fight each other in the streets. While Joker’s minions are deranged lunatics, Batman’s loyal fanatics aren’t much better. Taking a leaf out of Team Fortress 2’s book, their kooky humor makes an otherwise gruesome and violent game hilarious and light hearted.

Graphics:
Considering Impostors is available by download only, hopes weren’t high for its graphic quality. But I was surprisingly impressed. The mood of the game carries over into its characters and despite its cartoonish appearance it still has an air of realism to it. The weapons aren’t hyper realistic, but aren’t unbelievable. Plus, blood and body parts are thankfully missing and probably helped score it the Teen rating instead of Mature. The theme of the game is carnage on a budget, so you’ll see everything from gadgets put together with duct tape to a weapon that fires steel balls. Even the costumes are ragtag, displaying beanie caps and gym shorts. There are even a few guys running around in just their underwear.

Sounds:
In a game as fast paced and chaotic as Gotham Impostors, music isn’t noticed much while battle is raging. And there’s only so much that can be said about menu music (which was quite nice by the way). But the voice acting made this game worthwhile. Throughout regular gameplay, you can unlock different voices that each have a unique flavor and humor. But what’s more is you can modulate the voice’s pitch to high, low, or anywhere in between. It’s hilarious when you’re sniped by a tiny guy with a deep Russian voice, or when that big guy with the shotgun sounds like a squeaky insane clown.

Gameplay:
Impostors is a purely online shooter experience, which probably explains why it’s only available via download. Other than some challenge modes and the extremely short tutorial, there’s little to no single player. There are three different modes of multiplayer, standard Team Deathmatch, Fumigation (where you fight to control points on the map), and Psychological Warfare (similar to Halo’s Assault game variant). You can choose from an array of pretty standard weapons, a plethora of support items such as pipe bombs, throwing stars, and the like. You even can bring a gadget into battle like a glider to soar across the battlefield, spring shoes for that extra jump, an extremely useful grappling hook, and much more.

Longevity:
You won’t get access to all of this stuff right away of course. Monolith Productions came up with a surprising 100 levels to advance in order to unlock all of your gear. And you can earn a “Promotion” in a way that works similar to Call of Duty’s Prestige mode, ensuring that there will always be more to do. But what’s worrying is that Impostors is trying to hold itself up on multiplayer alone. With a relatively short supply of maps and only 3 different game modes, it’s tough to say how long this game will last.

Conclusion:
Considering it has a market price of about 15 dollars, Impostors is a phenomenal game. It’s not exactly original, but it’s fun and that’s what matters. It’s graphics aren’t top notch, but it far exceeds the average ‘download only’ game. And the gameplay mechanics are fresh enough that it establishes itself as its own. This game practically markets itself to batman nuts and shooter fans, but it definitely should warrant attention from those seeking a wacky and crazy break from the average FPS.
