Fez (Xbox 360 XBLA) Box Art(http://polytroncorporation.com/61-2) Rated E for Everyone by ESRB.  Imagine that you could see life from a whole new dimension; that there was more to the world than you were seeing before. A new game by Polytron wraps itself around this alternate dimension in a wonderful new arcade game called Fez. Fez starts out like your typical 2D sidescroller, until your character is granted a magical fez hat, which allows the player to rotate the world around the character. This turns the once familiar 2D sidescroller into a much deeper platforming game. The premise of the game is fairly simple:  the magical cube that once held the world in balance becomes corrupt, and splits into many pieces. It’s your job, with your new powers, to find the pieces of the cube and form smaller cubes, and eventually restore the giant magical cube itself.

Graphics:
While Fez has a sort of 8-bit retro look to it, it does feature some of the most colorful environments I’ve seen in a game this year. As the environments shift from day to night, the colors on the sky change, and even some stars will come out at night. The really amazing details, though, shine best when you rotate the scenery. Nothing loses or distorts its pixelated shape and details. There’s also a wide range of environments to explore for cube parts, as well. From sewers, to beautiful forests, and even mystical temples, Fez succeeds in bringing a beautiful and mysterious world of another dimension to pixelated life.

Sounds:
What really blew me away with Fez, though, was its music. The soundtrack has a very retro vibe to it, but the soundtracks for the different environments are each wondrous and magical. They really help to add to the puzzle you’re facing, or the world you’re currently exploring. It’s a perfect blend of nostalgic sounds, mixed with beautiful, resonate orchestral sounds that somehow works like a mashup.

Gameplay:
Fez is very easy to pick up on, as the controls for the game are stated for the viewer each time a new movement of item is presented. Also, there is a magical cube who becomes your companion on this journey, and who will give you tips if you can’t remember the controls or how something works. Some of these puzzles and platforms can be kind of tricky, and you will have to do some thinking about how things work in regards to the “other dimensions” presented in Fez. For example, the door to the temple may be on the other side of where you are, but you can see this if you remember to rotate the world a couple of times. Fez is just a single player game, but it is a very rewarding one at that, and you will find that solving the puzzles makes you feel quite accomplished.

Innovation:
Genre Conforming or Reforming: Fez is slightly innovative for its use of the rotation of the 2D world into one that actually has four dimensions. While some other games have done something similar to this before, I think Fez really executes it strongly.

Longevity:
Collectibles: Fez is an excellent platforming puzzle arcade game. It presents many fun and hard challenges to the player, while also providing an absolutely beautiful world to play in. The soundtrack is one of the best aspects of Fez, and certainly isn’t one to be missed. Fez is fun, interesting and adds a bit of a different spin to the typical 2D sidescroller.  Given these pluses, it is definitely worth the download on your Xbox.
