ISSIAN SeattleIf you have never been to an Izakaya, Issian Japanese Stone Grill on 45th St. is the ultimately destination for you to enjoy an authentic Japanese casual dining experience.

Izakaya is a kind of Japanese pub that serves both food and drinks. It allows diners to mix and match for a great variety of options and Issian is one of them.

Issian has the feel, tastes, and presentation of a traditional Japanese restaurant. Yuta Sugimoto, owner and chef of Issian, started the tapa-style restaurant in August 2008. Having been working in the hospitality industry for many years, Sugimoto has the taste bud to create an “umami” menu to fill the empty stomachs of the Seattleites.

The restaurant has a large selection of Kushiyaki (skewer grilled) and popular Izakaya dishes such as crispy grilled Tuna Collar and creamy mentai udon. Another specialty of Issian is the Ishiyaki (stone grill) method of cooking, which chef Sugimoto uses a lava rock from Mount Fuji to cook the meats. In this way, he easily keeps the meat juicy and tender.

An extensive list of Japanese beers and sake is also available to fulfill the crowds. For those who wish to nibble after a day of hard work, its Happy Hour (4:30-6:30p.m. everyday) is a must-try, as their yakitori (grilled chicken) and yakiton (grilled pork) are only $1 a skewer.
