Jaclyn Roth, the owner of Fat Ducks Deli and Bakery, was willing to make a bold move when a vacancy opened up in the neighborhood one year ago.

“I’ve been a baker all my life but had always worked for someone in the industry,” said Roth, now a first-time business owner. “I took all my savings and decided to jump at the chance, gamble and do it.”

When you are in the store, it is hard to miss the many baskets filled with flavorful bagels. From bacon cheddar chive to cinnamon raisin, Roth baked every one of them.
“I also make my own cream cheese,” Roth told her customers as she gave out samples of bagel chips with her signature garlic cream cheese spread.

Just when you think the variety of bagel available is hard enough for decision-making, a sandwich order form caught your attention, presenting you with even more options.
“Some customers feel apprehensive to have their sandwiches on bagels,” Roth said. “But I always tell them to try it on a bagel first, if they don’t like it, I will make it with bread.”

First time customer Kieth Frasier said Roth’s bakery is “highly recommended” right after he took a bite of the Triple Duck Club—a sandwich made with turkey, bacon, ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato.

“My kids went to the barber shop down the street and people over there told them to come here,” he said.

“Many kids love the ‘peanut butter death bar’,” Roth said. “You can’t go wrong with peanut butter and chocolate.”

When she first opened the bakery, in order to fit in with the vibrant lifestyle of the U-District, Roth decided a “fun and corky name like Fat Ducks” would make a perfect roll of the tongue.

The atmosphere inside the bakery is cozy and friendly. Colorful light bulbs and four-leaf clover ornaments hanging off the wall make customers feel like home.

“Kids can come in here, have a cup of coffee, eat some pastry and study,” Roth said. “I’m here until midnight anyway.”

If customers just want to relax, they have to option to sit and chat on a comfy couch where Roth has placed some stuffed playful ducklings.

“Some people were trying to get rid of their futon and asked if I could use it,” Roth said. “I told my sister that I needed something to match with the ducks theme so she mailed me those furry stuffed ducks from the East coast.”

Being a newcomer of the U-district, Roth enjoys getting to know her neighbors and customers.  She said that members of the Wing-it Production across the street and staff working at the bars around have all been a great support whenever she needed a helping hand.

“The experience has been eye-opening,” Roth said. “Everybody that lives here has been very supportive and helpful.”

Yet, located on the upper part of the Ave. can be a disadvantage at times. Roth is still trying to spread the words about her baked goodies.

“It’s hard to get people to come down this far off the mainstream,” Roth said. “I hope the good food and good service will make them go an extra block down the street.”

Behind the ScenesNote:

While stepping into a café for a cup of hot coffee, I always think what stories lay behind the shop. In Seattle, We are living in a dreary city, but still wear warm smiles. What special experiences bring us power to conquer the gloom inside our lives?

The most stirring story in life is our vigor and strength of spirit.
