Darksiders 2 (Wii U) Box Art(http://www.Darksiders2.com)  Rated M for Mature by ESRB.  Typically the realm of hack and slash action is dominated by Japan. Few Western releases manage to come out with near as much polish, refinement or quality as games like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden. God of War’s over simplified minimal risk high reward gameplay may be polished and quite solid, but its lack of depth was criticized by genre fans. Then, along came Joe Madureira, a huge fan of Japanese pop culture and manga, the prolific comic book artist responsible for some legendary comic arcs from X-men to Battle Chasers penned a game from absolute genius. Joe Mad’s Darksiders is one of the finest examples of quality in the genre, and Darksiders 2 only improves upon that. Darksiders 2 is an excellent title during its release back in August 2012 (Review: http://bit.ly/RM1FVT).  With the new Wii U, a new repackaged edition has been added to the Wii U’s launch roster. With the added extra content included and some new features, how will the Wii U edition of Darksiders 2 hold up?

Additions and Changes:
Without any direct additions or noticeable changes, the Wii U release of Darksiders 2 probably won’t sway or convince those who have already played or own the PS3/360 version. The only perk is that all of the pre-order DLC content is packed in and available immediately, however any future upcoming DLC doesn’t seem to be coming to this version, much like the Mass Effect 3 port.

The Wii U gamepad’s functionality is just that, functional. No additional flair or gimmick necessary, as the screen serves as a quick menu for skills, upgrades, equipment and maps. Vigil games made a very good choice in allowing for a lot of accessibility and no fluff.

Graphics Comparison:
Among the directly ported (not re-built) titles in the Wii U launch line-up, DarkSiders 2 is easily the best graphically. Unlike the other titles, the game manages to avoid the consistent frame-rate and load time issues that have been plaguing the Wii U launch. Only hit by minor texture pop-in the Darksiders 2 port is a very well done one indeed. Also unlike its opponents, Darksiders 2 is visually not much different. Graphic fidelity stacks up extremely well to the PS3 and 360 releases. Minor differences in resolution are apparent during close ups and cinematic, but the differences are only discernable by trained eyes looking for errors.

It would have been nice to have a decisive factor when picking the console to play on for DarkSiders 2. Since no single version of the game is markedly better or worse, nor are there any exclusive contents, picking up the Wii U version is simply a matter of whether or not you own the game already. Darksiders 2 is a very good game indeed, and worth your hard earned cash. If you have the Wii U and haven’t already picked it up, add this one to the shelf.
