Additions:
Team Ninja broke the mold with DOA5U in that the shear amount of added content absolutely trounces on the competition. While story mode is largely the same, TN has added tag mode and coop tag mode to all non-story modes. A new set of combo challenges and tutorials will bring novice players to pro level with the right amount of determination. For the visually oriented among us, 4 characters have been added with Momiji and Rachel from Ninja Gaiden, and the return of Leon and Ein. Even better, over 100 additional costumes have been built in to the game AND a promise for new stages and DLC costumes will increase the value every few weeks. From a pure dollar to feature rate, DOA5U is the single biggest bang for your buck in the genre.

Balancing Changes:
Hardcore fighters will also find a completely different DOA5 with Ultimate. Every character has been thoroughly rebalanced,  had their combos altered, gained new move strings, and had combos removed. My personal favorite character Ayane plays closer to her DOA1 style than her DOA3 version as she did in vanilla 5. I could bore you or confuse you with a detailed description of the frame data changes and property shifts, but truth be told I couldn’t explain them very well anyway. Those who want to know are better off hitting TKPlayers, Free Step Dodge, or DOAWorld to see complete breakdowns. That said, I can assure you that DOA5U is arguably the best in the series with a promise of regular patches and rebalancing efforts by Team Ninja and the pro players world wide.

Conclusion:
If you already own and are satisfied with DOA5, maybe you don’t need Ultimate. However, passing this iteration up is not wise as the shear value is incredible. It is obnoxious that you have to buy a brand new disc to get the new features, but all the additions do make the budget price well worth it for fans of the series and genre. Those who aren’t sure about the upgrade can actually pick up the DOA5U: Core Fighters, a free to play version of the game where you pay for individual character unlocks and costumes, but all modes except story are open and free. All in all, DOA5U is a substantial value, and fighters everywhere will absolutely find something to love. Team Ninja hit it out of the park this time, and should be rewarded for doing so.
