Naomi WilsonRunning against strong competitor and incumbent Rod Dembowski for King County Council District, Naomi Wilson, a proponent and expert in health policies believes her expertise could help lead the upcoming implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act.

“We have no one on the council who has any background in healthcare and public health,” Wilson said. “We are at time where we critically need someone to manage public health and bring the issues forward that need to be addressed.”

At the age of four as a second generation Korean-American, Wilson used to translate billing questions for her mother, and eventually become an advocate for her family. She currently works at the UW Harborview Medical Center.

Wilson underscored the importance of outreach in a diverse society.

“No matter how powerful you are, no matter how intelligent you are, if you don’t have the language and the culture, you’re not going be able to access what you need,” she said.

Wilson pointed out that with an immigrant population around 17 percent in Seattle, there comes the challenge of how to accurately translate insurance and healthcare matters.

“In order for Affordable Health Care to be successful, especially within the immigrant population, we have to find people in those communities who can be champions for that,” said Wilson.

She encourages active public outreach rather than placing emphasis on still information such as the website.

Besides health issues, Wilson would like to tackle transportation issues. Wilson said it is essential to find ways to fund the transportation program in a transit dependent population. Instead of cutting metro routes, she would like to ensure that people have the means to get to health centers and other social services.
