Samsung buys LoopPay, a competitor to Apple’s mobile wallet
Samsung announced it had acquired LoopPay, a mobile payments company, signaling its interest in controlling smartphone-based purchases. The move comes just months after the release of Apple Pay. LoopPay’s technology relies on a magnetic transmission sent from a user’s phone to a merchant’s payment terminal, mimicking a credit card swipe.

China urges fewer fireworks during New Year celebrations
Setting off fireworks to celebrate Chinese New Year may be a centuries-old tradition, but the country’s authorities are urging people to light fewer of them this week as cities fight a losing battle against relentless, toxic air pollution. Dozens of cites in China have outright banned lighting fireworks on Wednesday and Thursday, while others have reduced the number of fireworks vendors allowed to operate.

NBC channel is now live on PCs, devices in 10 markets
Television viewers in 10 U.S. markets are now able to watch their local NBC stations live on computers and mobile devices – as long as they are paying customers. Although the stations are available for free with an antenna, NBC is limiting its free online streaming to cable and satellite TV subscribers.
