Chroma Squad (PC) Box (http://www.chromasquad.com/) Have you ever been watching Power Rangers and thought, “Gee a tactical RPG about Power Rangers sure would be a swell game!” ….No? Really? Never thought about it? Well aren’t you glad the folks over at Behold Studios did all that thinking for you then? Chroma Squad is just that type of game, a tactical RPG that follows five stunt actors who quit their jobs to start their own Power Rangers based TV Show! It’s up to you, the player, to make sure their show is profitable, popular, and that your characters are properly equipped to handle the enemies at hand. I never would have imagined this mash-up would ever work, but it does, and Chroma Squad is the most fun I’ve had with a tactical RPG in a long time.

Is it Worth it?
Chroma Squad has an adorable pixel-style that many indie games use these days, but the game’s visuals are displayed on a 2.5D plane, meaning they’re 2D sprites, but they run around the world from a side/top down perspective, as is common with most tactical RPG’s. The color palette used for Chroma Squad is appropriately bright and helps give the game its charm. Chroma Squad is a very easy game to follow, it doesn’t just dump you into the game and expect you to figure everything out, It introduces new and more complex items/battle maneuvers with time, and makes sure to walk you through these new interactions. Believe me, I honestly wasn’t expecting the game to be as deep and fun as it actually is. After the first few battles, I picked up on the team-work battle system, the awesome ability to have your heroes “power-up” and put on their costumes to boost their powers, and that you will lose viewers If you don’t follow director’s orders (which are mission specific, such as defeating all enemies before beating the boss, reaching the hostage in 3 turns, etc.). Then as I got more into the game, I discovered an in-depth crafting system, which even goes so far as to let players create their own giant mecha for use in special battles. You even get to reply to fan mail you receive about the show! There’s a pretty hilarious story and plot line for players to follow as well. I found myself laughing at some great references and comedic names too. At the end of every battle, players will view a screen where the public shows their tweets and facebook statuses about Chroma Squad and the episode you just premiered, the reactions and audience members watching will increase/decrease based on how closely you follow the director’s orders and by how well you perform  in battle.  Chroma Squad combines fresh mechanics on a classic gameplay style that fans of tactical RPG’s are sure to enjoy. Casual and hardcore gamers will find something to enjoy with Chroma Squad, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for some good old fashioned Power Ranger-esque nostalgia! And very fun gameplay, of course.
