在人生中經歷一次9級大地震當然是可能的,但是對西雅圖人來說,情況並不是一些媒體宣傳的那麼「有可能」。聯合國地質調查機構(USGS)針對西雅圖對地震的恐慌,近日發佈推文稱,「還沒到大地震的時候。大型地震的平均間隔期是500到600年,而間隔從200到800年不等,上次大地震發生是316年前」。據USGS的說法,在今後五十年間發生9級大地震的可能性大約在10%-15%之間。

《紐約客》此前的報道稱太平洋西北地區的大地震早在72年前就該來了,這種說法被許多媒體進一步渲染。儘管最近華州附近有幾次地震發生,但真正應該憂慮的應該是我們的後代。

然而,地震始終是不可預測的,就像警示系統證明的那樣,家中常備緊急箱依舊是必要的。
