在人生中经历一次9级大地震当然是可能的,但是对西雅图人来说,情况并不是一些媒体宣传的那么「有可能」。联合国地质调查机构(USGS)针对西雅图对地震的恐慌,近日发布推文称,「还没到大地震的时候。大型地震的平均间隔期是500到600年,而间隔从200到800年不等,上次大地震发生是316年前」。据USGS的说法,在今后五十年间发生9级大地震的可能性大约在10%-15%之间。

《纽约客》此前的报道称太平洋西北地区的大地震早在72年前就该来了,这种说法被许多媒体进一步渲染。尽管最近华州附近有几次地震发生,但真正应该忧虑的应该是我们的后代。

然而,地震始终是不可预测的,就像警示系统证明的那样,家中常备紧急箱依旧是必要的。
